Cairo International Independent Filmfest // Concept
––––
Filmmaking is like any other form of art, it provides opportunities for self-expression, social awareness and cultural exposure. However, with the
current political situation in Egypt, this form needs space to be expressed. With distribution restrictions on films that don’t meet governmental regulations, independent Egyptian filmmakers are often forced to compromise their freedom of expression to stay out of trouble. Therefore, I
created a brand concept for a film festival in Cairo that communicates the story of independence. The typeface is inspired from graffiti stencils,
yellow creates alertness and the design element is a metaphor for censorship.

Posters (Before)
The concept of the posters is based on how censorship hides part of the truth and changes its meaning. I want the audience to experience what censorship is and allow them to interact with the brand. The censored version of the poster gives the opposite meaning of the actual statements.

Posters (After)
The audience have to take action and remove the colored stripe to view the statement in its true meaning.
The same concept works after the removal of the stripe. Through distance, the censored words aren’t quite visible, viewers have to approach the poster in order to read the statement.

I applied the same concept on other applications as well. The tickets are censored by scratch-off labels, attendees and participants have to scratch them off to view the censored words.
