Telepresence

SYNOPSIS:

The project intermixes multiple self processed & re-photographed 35mm B&W film snaps of 'camgirls' (from a large scale, live-streaming, wall projected image) alongside iPhone/iPad photo captures & manipulations, in order to create intimate portraits from numerous private, virtual chat rooms. My goal was to capture the hidden discontent and separation present in modern day technological lust. The aim was to intentionally portray them close-up, almost immersed in their presence, as in macro photography, where as an artifact the faces become slightly distorted and hence more disconnected from the physical world. I wanted to compare in both contrasting techniques, whether the portrayed subtle facial expressions can channel the distant and disconnected aesthetic even when a face becomes nothing more than the most basic of outputs ( a + or - , a 1 or 0, a black or white pixel/dot). They become more like virtual, or dream characters, rather than real girls.  They represent the dissolving nature of the real into the virtual & vice versa.
