The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale
My illustration is the cover art for a fictional magazine I created that is dedicated to exploring and celebrating fictional novels. The cover features an image inspired by Margaret Atwood's iconic novel "The Handmaid's Tale", with the main character, Offred, depicted in her fully oppressed state. The use of red dominates the illustration, reflecting the significance of the handmaids' clothing and its role in identifying and controlling them in the novel's dystopian society.

Atwood's novel is a powerful commentary on gender relations, authoritarianism, and religious fundamentalism. Through this illustration, I aimed to capture the intense emotions and disturbing themes of the novel, while also paying tribute to Atwood's masterful storytelling. The oppressive atmosphere of the illustration and the use of bold, dramatic colors reflect the bleakness of Offred's world, and the severity of the oppression she and other women face.

Overall, my illustration aims to convey the emotional intensity and powerful message of Atwood's novel, while also highlighting the important social and political issues that it addresses. By placing Offred front and center, in her iconic red dress, I hope to draw readers in and encourage them to engage with the themes and ideas that Atwood explores so powerfully in her work.
