My psa poster is about deforestation. Specifically, the deforestation of the amazon that is driven by farming. My poster visualizes the land lost by displaying a palm oil crop in the cutout of a front loader. Heavy machinery is used to deforest the amazon because it is so dense and thick. The equipment is used to essentially dig up the Amazon and trample whatever is left; killing most wildlife. Palm oil crops are the main perpetrator of farming related deforestation. This can be attributed to the popularity of the crop. Food all around the world relies on palm oil, making it very profitable. Despite all of the negative consequences of deforestation farmers continue to plow away the rainforest just so they can be a part of the 70 billion dollar market that is only expected to expand. The countless endangered species that rely on the Amazon are displaced and often times die because populations become a lot more dense. I represented this with the birds in the poster; the bird in the palm oil plantation being greyed out.

I had great success in using the cutout of the front loader to provide contrast between the forest and crop. I was worried the colors of the two would be too similar but after adjusting the colors I found it to work quite nicely.

I had difficulty in using the heal brush and the smart heal brush to expand the crop image and the forest image to be more zoomed out. I needed to do that to retain clarity and to show a sense of scale because this is a large issue at hand. It took a lot of fine tuning but I was able to get both images to fill up the entire image. If I were to do it again I would make the palm oil crop look even smaller, making it look to scale; as now the crop looks larger than it should be as viewed from this height above.
