Rural Communities in NSW Launch “It’s Up to Us”

Experienced entrepreneur Ali Talanehzar has been exposed to business since his childhood days. As a boy, he spent his after-school hours working in his father’s souvenir shop. Ali Talanehzar serves as the general manager of Premier Capital and Construction and handles the company's operations. Premier Capital Construction holds existing agreements with major organizations to meet the growing shortage of affordable housing in Sydney and the rest of New South Wales.

The affordable housing crisis in New South Wales continues to get serious. According to the data released by the Community Housing Industry Association - New South Wales, in western Sydney alone, the social housing waitlist has increased by eight percent. That translates to 18,377 individuals and families. Throughout the entire New South Wales, 58,000 individuals and families are waitlisted. Everyone on the waitlist will take 80 years to get a house at the current investment rate.

Instead of waiting for a miracle to happen, some residents on the far south coast of New South Wales have taken proactive action to solve the problem. They started a fundraising initiative called “It’s Up to Us.” Michael Brosnan, the convenor of the fundraiser, said that “It’s Up to Us” exactly describes their predicament and that through this initiative, they are helping the government fill the need.

Since the fundraiser started in 2021, “It’s Up to Us” has already raised $350,000. Of this amount, six (and another three are coming) transportable temporary units have been built to house people across New South Wales. Brosnan and the group, however, are hopeful that long-term investments will become available soon so that more permanent accommodations can be constructed
