Scaly-breasted Munias (Lonchura punctulata)
This species can be found in the hills of Himalaya, India, China and Southeast Asia. It is a seed-eater and can be spotted in grasslands harvesting seeds from plant to plant.
Munias are gregarious and June is the mating season when one can observe vigorous mating rituals.
This is the most common species of munias in Singapore along with the White-headed and Chestnut munias.
Also known as Nutmeg Mannikin, its name comes from the scale-like markings on its breast and belly. These markings are less visible or absent in juveniles.
