Project Statement:
Notorious Knotts is a family roller derby team that showcases the values of traditional roller derby. The objective of this project is to develop logos and apply them to multiple items. The project consists of the team’s primary and secondary logo, team uniform, identity systems, and the brand identity style guide. Each component of this project was designed to convey passion, competition, and strength. Red, black, and white are used heavily to represent boldness and power. These colors are also prevalent in American traditional tattoo art which inspiration was taken. The typefaces, CCClobberinTimeSmooth and Century Gothic Pro were used to further reflect the team's power and courage. The primary and secondary logos were made to appear strong, fast, and feminine because roller derby is a traditionally female-dominated sport. Roses appear in both logos as another nod to American-traditional tattoos.
Sketches:
For my main logo, I knew I wanted a figure, inspired by American traditional tattoo pin-up women, to be throwing a skate at the viewer. Since roller derby is a very rough, competitive, contact sport I wanted my logo to have a lot of movement and look strong. I struggled with finding the right position that would show the team name best. I wanted my secondary logo to just be roller skates, I ended up adding the rose from my main logo to my secondary to make them clearly connected.

Color Study
Since my logo is inspired by American traditional tattoo art styles I knew I wanted to use red, black, and white. All of these colors are used heavily in that art style. Used together they also further evoke the message of the brand, strength, power, and boldness.
Type Study
CCClobberintimesmooth and Century Gothic Pro are the two typefaces used throughout my project. CCClobberintimesmooth is used strictly for headlines and short pieces of copy such as page numbers or headlines. Century Gothic Pro is used as a more readable font for large amounts of copy. This helps to enforce hierarchy as well as continue the brand's message.
Logo Versions
For this first version, I initially wanted to have the word "the" at the top of my circle so I had to pose my figure differently. Many aspects of these logos ended up being very awkward, such as the thin lines and some technical issues. The thin strokes really ended up being a problem as it made it hard to shrink down and does not look strong, which is a big aspect in this team.
Business Card Versions
I was having trouble deciding how I wanted to design the front of my business card, as I wanted it to reflect the style of my logo. Since the back of the card has curved outlines I figured, adding a white outline to my logo would look cleaner for the final version.
Envelope Versions
For my envelope, I decided to only use my secondary logo as my primary logo was getting harder to read. Since I ended up switching logos I decided to add the team name to my final version.
Letterhead versions
My first version of my letterhead had some technical issues, such as a white outline on my text box. The red border was also very small making my text very cramped together. Both logos felt too big and I needed to use my secondary typeface. For my second version, I tried out adding the team name to the top, but it felt unnecessary. My contact information was too close to the top of the red border. I also updated the secondary logo.
