The Chocolate Penguin Awards - Animal Farm Book Cover 

For this brief, we had to design a new and contemporary book cover design for Animal Farm by George Orwell. This brief was really out of my comfort zone as I don’t normally draw “gruesome”, however due to the book being Animal Farm, it had to reflect the story, which is really dark. I had already read the book prior to this project so I knew what it entailed, however I watched the Animal Farm Film to get more visual inspiration. 

Here are some rough sketches I drew as I watched the film.

I took my work to Procreate, and started designing and planning different placements for the characters and book title. I knew I wanted the main characters to be featured on the cover and some snippets of what the book entails, hence the windmill. I initially thought the fire surrounding the characters worked well, but later realised there was too much going on and it needed to be simpler.

This was my final design for the book cover. 

I then designed the back cover and spine in indesign, and made the full sheet design.

Once getting my design printed, I folded it to the book and it came to life. This project really pushed me out my comfort zone and to say we had a short period of time to produce the work, I feel proud of this work and confident in creating a book cover now.
