Fascinating Flour

Fascinating Flour was the first ever project we embarked on as Indsutrial Design students.

Using steam as the driving process, how could one churn out the most visually astounding piece of flour?

This module was a cruel but effective way to teach us about resilience, which is definitely needed in this couse. Over the course of six weeks, I have spent about a third of them standing in the kitchen, almost setting it ablaze in the process. Investigating the properties of flour and how different baking ingredients altered them was a challenge that I never realized would be this difficult.

Below are just some of the hundreds of recipes that I have attempted.
The final piece is titled "Down the Rabbit Hole(s)" , inspired the interesting porous features and brilliant red color that reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. Using a combination of flour, baking soda, water and food coloring, the piece is steamed until a shell forms towards the centre. Just before the entire shell forms, open the lid and turn off the heat immediately, causing the shell to collapse into the middle while forming these holes.
