Tedéum — 2014

Tedéum is an installation enabling a dialogue on the national consciousness growing in societies today. The generative interface pulls from 15 different world anthems to create a custom one which brings up the question of how do we reflect on history, and how does it shape who we are as individuals taking part of a community.
The installation challenges the notions of a clear-cut national identity by pulling and pushing from what has been previously established to present a new structure that confronts the meaning behind these words. Visually it exists in 4 parts:

1. Touchscreen generating the song: every time the user touches a word the same is replaced by another word of the same type (noun/preposition/adjective/etc) shifting meaning but keeping the same song arrangement throughout interaction. It offers an international version as well as an english one, interchangeable in the spot by the user.
2. Set of 3 Flags representing new identities: The colors are averaging the 15 national flags from the countries used in the anthem generator. Pairing a primary color with a secondary color and creating 3 movements, representing the 3 song arrangements used on the 15 anthems: angular, organic, and linear.
3. Musical performance of one of the generated anthems/Flag Ceremony with the help of composer Emily Black
4. Poster board with take-aways.

Tedéum is a fragmentation of symbols that confronts representation through generated text pulling from a specific view of history to question national identity.
