The Complete Package (SintLucas)

The complete package (SintLucas)
Koen Chatrou
For this assignment we had to make our own packaging design for a random action figure, mine was a wizard.

Font research
I eventually went with the Amster Black font. (The third on the list)
Persona of a customer
Packaging inspiration
To get some idea's for a toy packaging I made a quick moodboard of different types of packaging that I thought looked good or stood out.
Physical Packages
For inspiration of physical packages I found the two packages above.
The airpods were interesting to me because of the tiny lid design, it gave me the idea of some sort of close-able package.
The beauty blender looked good because of the sleeve around it, the tiny avocados printed on the sleeve gave a sort of 3D effect together with the styling of the package itself.
Packaging blueprint
I eventually settled with the idea of a hexagonal shaped wizard tower with a sleeve you can remove.
Prototype 1
The looks of first prototype was what I was looking for but the way of assembling wasn't really handy and the floor was also very loose because it didn't have anything to support itself on, and the roof was very hard to stick to the hexagon.
Prototype 2
For the second prototype I tried to use a horizontal stroke to make the sleeve fit the shape better, however it did the exact opposite and made it even more unstable.
The floor was also still way too loose.

Prototype 3
Eventually I ended up with the third prototype which was pretty much what I wanted, it gave support to the floor by adding two pillars and made the assembling of the roof easier by adding some strips on the roof itself and hexagon.
Packaging design
After I had my final package blueprint I started designing the inside of the packaging.
As a starting point for the rest of the design I made a star/constellation night sky.
Interior
For the interior of package I started with a simple wall design with some details on the ceiling and floor.
Then I made an arch type of window with the night sky I designed earlier in the background.
For details like this I always start with the shapes of the object and then I color them in just so I can keep focus on the different aspects of the object and I don't have to focus on everything all at the same time.
After the arch I designed multiple other interior objects to use in my design. I created a table with a rocketship lamp, an art frame for potential paintings and a telescope.
For the paintings I made three different designs, I found the first one too detailed for a package so I went ahead and created a simpler and more recognizable moon and big-dipper designs.
When I had all my interior pieces I tried to play around with them a bit but eventually ended up with these two compositions. One where the telescope is right in front of the window and one where it isn't.
I went with the one where it isn't right in front of the window because I found that one looked a lot more balanced and also kept the arch visible instead of hiding it.
Above you can see multiple different roof designs, I used the same designs as in the painting and window/arch.
I also tried to add some sort of support beams to make it look like the roof was curving up but I ended up not liking it so I went with the same design as in the window to give the interior a coherent feeling.

For the floor I wanted something simple and effective so I chose for a wooden floor with some depth effects.
Here also I played around with the colors of the planks and I eventually went with the second one because it felt the most balanced.
One of my teachers also recommended me to add some objects to the floor to make it look a bit more used and filled. So I designed a book and wizard wand.
Exterior
For the exterior I started with a simple plain stone wall.
I created the wall by designing a lot of stones and puzzling them together and filling up the empty space with smaller stones.
To make it look old and used I added some vegetation and aging to the stones.
Then I used the same arch as I used on the inside to create a window type of effect.
To finish it off I got the feedback of some classmates that the outside didn't look and feel as lively as the inside so to try and stimulate that I changed the color of some stones to yellow-ish tones
Furthermore I wanted to add a little backstory of the character to the outer sleeve of the package, so I wrote a short story and tried different fonts and effects to see which one looked the best.
For the roof I wasn't quite sure what I wanted so I started by making some symmetrical roof tiles. I didn't feel like these fit too well so I made some messier and random ones and I thought the second one worked best because these tiles weren't too small and not too detailed.
Then I made a couple of variations to keep that random pattern I was looking for, and I created six different triangles for each side of my hexagon.
When I placed them all together I added some texture to the tiles.
I also tried adding some vegetation but, because the roof is also green, this just made it look messier and it didn't look quite right.
Sleeve
For the base of the sleeve I mostly kept the same design as for the outside and inside of the inner package but I just extended it.
After I completed the base I added the backstory, a place where the productinformation could be listed and the name of the wizard.
Full blueprint
This is the finished blueprint with cut- and creaselines.
I also made another prototype to see how everything looked on the package itself and the final version will be printed and cut at school.
