Route 66 Road Trippin' Board Game

Route 66 Road Trippin' Board Game
This project required our group to create a portable board game in order to expand the current market for an existing board game company (e.g. Hasbro). The solution we devised is an entirely new board game called “Route 66 Road Trippin’”.

The game play follows Historic Route 66 and leads players from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica. The game allows the players to “visit” Route 66 attractions along the way, and learn the history of Route 66.

The type choices, and drawing style were decided upon by a group of designers and illustrators. The illustration style is meant to imply a sense of realism while still allowing for the fun and whimsy of a children’s board game.

Several aspects were designed: game packaging, game board, playing pieces, dice, action cards, and an instruction booklet. The game board is designed to look like a road map while folded up, playing into the theme of the game as part of a road trip. Once opened, the board is visible. The actual path of gameplay is road, and there are icons on the spaces that imply certain action cards must be picked up. Drawings representing different Route 66 stops are also visible, helping the players to trace the route.

The playing pieces are stylized Volkswagen Beetle buses. They are bright and colourful, and not only appeal to the children wanting to play the game, but also to the parents who might play with them. Four faux Volkswagen keys are given to the players in order to start the game.
