SOME MICROMOLLUSK FAUNA FROM WEIZHOU ISLAND,

The Weizhou Island is the largest and youngest volcanic island in the China Seas, which is piled up by Quaternary basalt magma, with a total area of 24.7 km2. The coast is 15.6 km, with 6~10 km of sandy beach. Coral reefs have been established and high marine biodiversity around the island. Locate in subtropical monsoon climate zone, with an average annual temperature of 23 ℃, sea water temperature of 24.6℃, and precipitation of 1297 mm. The demarcation of Chinese molluscan faunal region, of which is a part of the Indo-West-Pacific region.

According to published reports concerning the micromollusk fauna of Weizhou Island are still unknown, which we interest and the progress of survey was executed from Sept. 2019 to Nov. 2021. A total of 45 families and about 308 species of the micromollusk were recorded from the Weizhou Island of China. Also, some rare microgastropodas, and including 14 new species are first demonstrated in this report.

Furthermore, preliminary study on some basic ecological parameters relation to the species of micromollusk (e.g., the distribution, density of population, and species richness etc.), more than 110 locations among 10 sample areas were selected at a same interval distance along intertidal zones. And specimens were picked up from sand sediment and debris in the sandy beach and rocky shore through the sieve analysis. We found that, especially, the Bittium glareosum (Gould, 1861) was one of the dominant species, which widely distributed throughout Weizhou Island and the density of population was 38.80 (mean ind. of specimen /100g sand wt.) at Shell Beach west area. Additionally, with the analysis of sand-size types from sample areas, of which results be inferred that the ambient sediments of fine sand around habitats is one of mainly factors suitable to microgastropod, but need to further study.
