Because of its remote location, Sierra de Cubitas, is a niche for biodiversity.  In 2020 I had the opportunity to take photographs in this ecological reserve.

Maria is a park ranger in the Sierra de Cubitas Ecological Reserve, she was born there and knows these hills like the back of her hand. The day I went to visit the park she was my guide. During the tour she didn't talk much beyond the basic information she gives every day to the tourists. But at one point she stopped in front of the entrance to a cave, stared at me and said:

-They say that the spirit of a fugitive Indian lives there. I saw him once.

Then he continued walking.

The Jiquí is a timber tree endemic to Cuba. Because of its buoyancy this wood was used by the Cuban aborigines to build canoes. Due to its overexploitation, today it is difficult to find it in the forests of Cuba.
