In 2013, I created a new character to compete in the anticipated eighth annual Mortal Kombat Online Kreate-A-Kharacter tournament (MKO KAK VIII). The sub-boss character, called Hecatomb, was an Oni hybrid of Lycan and Minotaur (Lyctaur) classification. I had posted three teaser images of the character around a year after the seventh tournament had started...
…and kept the reveal image hidden until the tournament’s entry.
However, MKO KAK VIII was cancelled (with still no plans of a revival), and I mostly kept the character a secret. Within the past decade, only friends, colleagues, and potential employers knew of my character’s image and/or narrative. Last year, I revisited the narrative and added Brutalities, which were finishing moves that the newer games included (although the name is shared with a finishing move that started in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3). I hoped to enter the character a new contest to no avail. My image was created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Hecatomb wore some attire like the Brothers of the Shadow faction in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
Due to the violent nature of the narrative, I have provided a brief character bio below:
As one of the sorcerer Quan Chi’s bodyguards, Hecatomb originated from the Nether Realm and possessed erratic rage that compromised Quan Chi’s quest to find the Amulet to free the fallen Elder God, Shinnok. Prior to Bi-Han/the Elder Sub-Zero’s chance to partake in the Amulet missions, Quan Chi sealed Hecatomb in a cave. Upon escaping from the cave, Hecatomb hunted for the traitorous Quan Chi, who had allied with Shang Tsung and the Oni subordinates Moloch and Drahmin. [NOTE: Hecatomb fit in with the storyline of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.]
