PAINTERS' LAKE HOUSE | international competition

Painter’s Lake House International Competition- Shortlisted Projects
The courtyard appeared as a solution to the main issues of the theme, the connection of different types of spaces, the lighting and the winds. The fence that completes the perimeter of the yard has the role of blocking the winds coming from the west and northwest and to outline a garden with an intimate character. Building the fence out of wooden slates is a choice that allows biodiversity to enter the premises. The distribution of functions on the ground is carried out according to the cardinal points. The private areas are oriented strictly to the south, while the common areas are oriented to the west, taking advantage of the protection of the fence. The workshop uses zenithal light and the windows that allow the view to the outside landscape are oriented towards the lake and the inner garden. The experience of discovering the space starts from the fountain placed in the access area, reaching the entrance hall that connects private life and living in the community, but also the exterior of the complex with its private garden. The separation of the zones is obvious, but the connection of these spaces is made either through corridors or through the interior garden space, aiming to ensure easy accessibility through short routes that offer unique perspectives.
The individual housing units are basically designed for two person couples, but the attic space can function as an home office for the partner who accompanies the artist or can be transformed into an additional bedroom for children. The living room with fireplace becomes the place where the family can spend time in privacy, while the cooking area and the common living room are spaces for socializing.

The materials used are mainly wood and reeds characteristic of the area, The use of reeds to cover the roof ensures good thermal insulation and a low impact on the environment. The wood is used both for the construction of the above-ground structure, the exterior finish of the workshop, the fence, the pontoon and the shutters of the windows oriented towards the acrdinal points affected by the direction of the wind.
For a reduced energy consumption, we proposed a heating system for the spaces based on a ground-water heat pump exploiting the dimensions of the land, while to ensure electricity, are used solar panels, masked by the terrace.
