Fractus

This responsive wearable garmentconsists of large gem-like structures that were created with inspiration fromthe visual that sugar crystals exhibit when examined under close inspection.

This wearable garment consists of over50 LEDs that create beautiful pulsating patterns that directly relate to thewearers breathing patterns.

Fractus is a latin word meaning "broken" or"fractured. We thought this a fitting project name as it speaks of thesharp, molecule-like structures that wrap around the façade of the garment. Italso speaks of the sporadic behaviour of the pattern and motion the LEDsportray.

Underneath the outer layer of the dress are two self constructedbreathing sensors. Each sensor is connected to a respective LED matrix. Thesensors translate and controlthe order and speed at which the LEDs turn on and off to create a patternacross the entire dress, through the breath of the model wearing the garment. The sensors are constructed from sections of elastic material sewn withconductive thread placed around the waist of the dress; the thread is feed intotwo separate arduinos and programmed with a code so that when the model exhalesand inhales, stretching the elastic and putting tension on the conductivethread, the LEDs within the circuit are directly affected. The patternsdesigned from the illuminating LEDs represent visualisations of the wearerspulsating breath.

Our goal with Fractus was toconstruct a beautiful creation fit for exhibition or theatrics display. We aimedto provoke the observer with something out of the ordinary, something that theywouldn’t be accustomed to, to encourage them to analyse what should comprise a successfulwearable garment.
