Spirits of the Middle Passage - Fish I

Spirits of the Middle Passage Series - Fish I

Between 1500 to 1866 nearly 12.5 million African slaves were transported to America. 1.8 million died on the waters of the Middle Passage.

One of the greatest shortcomings of the African American community is how it remembers and honors it’s ancestry. Those who lived long before us. Those from whom many of us have descended. Those who endured and died of horrific treatment.

In 2008 I participated in a juried exhibition hosted by Houston MFA & 5A. The collection I introduced is called the Spirits of the Middle Passage.

I created the collection to honor the 1.8 million African slaves who perished crossing the Middle Passage. I felt the need to make beauty from the horror. The fish are meant to stir consideration. To remind us of the ones who came before us and what they suffered.
