Kachina dolls are presented to infants of both sexes as good-luck symbols. They are spirits or personifications of things in the real world. A kachina represents anything in the natural world or cosmos, from a ancestor to an element, a location, a quality, a phenomenon, or a concept. The theme of the kachina is the presence of life in all objects filling the universe.  Kachina properties become clearer when we realize they are invoked with purpose to augment fertile crops, and abundant living conditions. As Hopi symbols, they are harbingers of life-giving rain, luck, and serve the Hopi in their needs.
