It was my extreme privilege to direct this production of The Railway Children, as well as design its set.
The wonderful challenge and beauty of this production was its fluidity. Scenes move quickly form one location to another; a train station, to a London town house, to Yorkshire, to another train station, etc. Nearly constant movement of the set was required. However the feeling of the movement needed to be completely natural, gliding as seamlessly from one location to the next as the written dialogue.
In order to keep a consistency through the show and meet the requirements of the script I decided to create a simplistic set of railroad tracks that different “railroad cars” could glide through to create our scenes. Our “railroad cars” were simply 4x8 platforms that a pulley system offstage would track on and off.
This designed helped to enhance the fluid nature of the script, as well show a constant presence of the railroad through the production.
