Wartime colour schemes
Year: 2022
This project is my year 2022 in colour schemes.
I started creating them after coming back to Kyiv from the evacuation in May 2022. Each of them is a picture taken by me. They reflect my experience of living during the wartime and trying to see the beauty around no matter what.
1. Marigolds, July

This scheme is about joy and ukrainian roots. Marigolds are probably our sacred flowers. They are full of bright, even warm shades, and very vivid. You wouldn't use a lot of these colours in residential interiors, but they can be excellent accents.
This scheme also contains a light grey, slightly warm shade. This is the color of dry ground, basic shade which calms the entire gamut.
Have you ever walked barefoot on a trail in summer? That's how it is. And green shade here is a little bit cold, balancing the warmth of other shades and adding freshness.
2. A damaged road, August

This is the color scheme for the damaged road in a village, where I spent my childhood.
It was under occupation for several months, many residental buildings were damaged or completely destroyed. Russian soldiers lived in our house, stole lots of things and left a complete disaster. Many other residental buildings were damaged or completely destroyed.
There are many traces of explosions and shellings, and it is quite symbolic that they are not completely covered, but rather remind of themselves. This colour scheme is calm, down-to-earth, with layers of gray of various intensity and yellow-green shades that seem to enliven it.
3. Apples, September

The color scheme of the end of summer and autmn beginning. The combination of green and red seems so natural due to they are complementary colors. They remind me of a safe and carefree childhood. Suiting and emphasizing each other well because of nice contrast - being situated at opposite sides of the color wheel.
4. A shelling in Kyiv, October

This scheme could be quite carefree and light if not the context. The photo shows the building of the Philology Institute at the city centre, which was damaged by shelling in the middle of november.
In autumn, due to the bright sun and a small amount of green colors, everything seems a little bit bleached and muted. This allows to create almost pastel-like, pale and warm color schemes, inspired by everyday life.
5. One nice chestnut, November

A totally autumn colour palette.
The base shade is light and reminds coffee, like a huge warm cappuccino on a sunny morning (when bombs aren't flying over your head).
Imagine wood of light and dark chestnut tones, with a special shade of green. You can notice it only in freshly picked, prickly chestnuts. For some reason you want to fill with them all your pockets.
6. Life in spite of everything, December

A deep, bright palette about movement and power. Bright colour blocks of red, green and deep blue - as the evening sky before night. All of them are connected with white-yellow accents, life-affirming shade of garlands and rare city lights during the war.
This photo I took at exhibitional center in Kyiv - one of it's Christmas locations. It captures happy children running and playing, despite all sufferings, destroyed cities and lives, lack of electricity, constant sirens and shellings. We are alive and we are standing for our freedom.
