Chiang Mai, capital of the Lan Na kingdom. The kingdom of Lan Na was founded in 1259 by King Mangrai. He extended his power to neighboring states and founded the city of Chiang Rai in 1262, located on the border of present-day Laos. Mangrai encouraged the development of Mon culture (an ethnic group originating in Burma) and Therevada Buddhism.
The center of the city of Chiang Mai is surrounded by an ancient wall, inside which are some of the most important temples of the city, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Sing, Wat Chiang Man, etc..
