KARANG KERANG (BIO-BUILDING MATERIAL)

K A R A N G   K E R A N G
(BIOMATERIAL - ALTERNATIVE CORAL BRICKS)
Developed with and for Cush Cush Bali

(from bahasa Indonesia) Karang = Coral ; Kerang = Seashell
Karang kerang is made of seashell dust and starch. The chemical reaction from ingredients makes bricks have pores that turn it into lightweight bricks that look like coral. The form of this material reminds us of the traditional building material - Coral Bricks - in Sanur, Bali. Nowadays, we can only find this wall in the old building due to the lack of Coral, along with the sea ecosystem.

In Bali, seashell is abundant material. There are a lot of waste seashells from restaurants and factories. Seashells contain 90% Calcium Carbonate (the similar material to make roman bricks). With this potential, we hope we can always regenerate this beautiful traditional building material.
