Designing with Glyphs
Art 235 | Typography | Project 01
Introduction
In this project we were asked to create two graphic compositions using only typography glyph. The requirements were to create one composition using the sans-serif font Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro 75 Bold, and to create a second composition using the serif font Stempel Garamond LT STD. We could use 5-8 glyphs, including at least 2 black and 2 white glyphs, in each composition.
Sans-Serif Composition
I chose this as my final submission because I think I was successful at creating interesting shapes with the letters and having a strong focal point. Throughout the process, I struggled with trying to do too much, when I simplified my composition, it became more successful. The 'a' creates a clear focal point and the curved lines and shapes keep your eye moving around the page.
Serif Composition
For my serif composition I decided to use a black background. I think this helps create a more dynamic composition. The angles give movement and energy to the composition, almost like it's falling over. The isolated 'k' creates a clear focal point which is emphasized by the negative space of the 'X'. I love the way the tail of the 'Q' combines with the '3' to create a really nice curved shape.
