The design and execution of this project was a valuable experience for me that I would like to share with you!
The Project was to design a temporary space as a commercial booth for the sale of String Art Portraits in Mashhad's Armitage commercial complex. One of the important challenges of this project was achieving a form that would be a symbol of this artistic activity and also not distort the visual Connection between customers and surrounding shops as much as possible.
Considering the thread Portraits and the temporality of the Project, it was decided that the main material of the booth should be String threads. By defining threads as geometric lines and repeating them in the space using the predefined path, we achieve curved surfaces as semi-transparent shells that shape the space of the booth.
For this purpose, 2000 meters of threads were used. Regarding the temporality of the Project, this amount of threads should not be Cut and lose its future potential applications. So to maintain the continuity of the threads, a reciprocating pattern was designed for passing the threads, in which the threads use the predefined path to move inside the built-in holes in the timber frames, so there was no need to cut the threads. The realization of this process depended on a highly accurate workflow in order of placing the threads without any physical conflict while the implementation. It was also necessary to find the proper thickness of the wooden frames, the proper type of connections used in the frames (interlocking Timber Connections), and choose the appropriate thread. Finally, all the Executive tips are included in the files for the CNC Cut and Buying Materials.
And in the end, it took about 20 days from design to implementation of this project. Buying Threads from the manufacturer, choosing the right material for the frames, testing different samples of Timber joints before the final implementation of the structure, painting, and passing the threads through the holes of the timber frames were some of the tasks that were time-consuming in this project. It may be interesting to note that it took 2 days to pass the threads through the holes, and at least two people were needed to execute it.
The design and implementation of this project were done in October 2021.
