The catalogue for the exhibition „Spirit Hidden in the Trees. The Tradition and Craftsmanship of Japanese Carpentry” is a visual and textual extension of the knowledge presented in the gallery rooms of the Manggha Museum in Krakow. This medium but comprehensive publication provides a deeper insight into history, technology, craftsmanship and rituality of Japanese carpenters. Much emphasis has been placed on the titular spirituality, an unparalleled quality lasting for centuries and driving straight from the specific character of the nature of Japanese archipelago.

Soft but large format of the book makes it more accessible, providing space for bigger high resolution photographs, easily readable texts and clearly visible diagrams. Graphic design and the layout of the catalogue compliments and supports different, simultaneously interwoven, layers of information, such as photo captions, history texts and precise descriptions of each of the exhibits.

_

Open binding, which is one of the most commonly used bookbindings in Japan (apart from typical machine bindings and traditional binding using the "Japanese sewing" method) allows the recipient to see the construction and structure of the book, which is an aspect corresponding to the theme of the exhibition. In addition, the open binding allows you to open the publication "flat", thanks to which we can view the photograph in its entire format, without losing image fragments at the inner margins. Sewing with a blue thread is a subtle accent, emphasizing the consistency of the publication with the entire identification.

_

This catalogue can freely function as a stand-alone publication. Although the studies contained in it refer to the materials presented in the museum, the developed content creates a synthetic nad comprehensive information about the traditional Japanese carpentry.
