Lighthouse Trail Identity

My concept for the identity of the trail began with the creation of a logo. I wanted to create a look that was contemporary and unconventional. Using radiating circles the logo suggests the outline of a beam of light projecting from its centre. The logo when activated contains photography of Irish coastal areas to evoke the natural beauty and mood of the locations around the lighthouses, and to give the logo a more inviting tone more fitting in its use as a tourism aid.
The concept of “looking through” the shapes of the logo, informed the rest of my applications. The stationery set and information brochure are composed from the yellow colour at the heart of the logo, with “windows” or “viewfinders” cut out of the forms to reflect the framing elements. Inside the brochure, information about each lighthouse, it’s facilities and amenities is balanced with large scale landscape photography. In my promotional campaign, I introduced the idea of movement to bring a more dynamic element to the brand. In the animation, footage of coatal areas plays inside an ever turning light as the circle at the centre flashes in each lighthouse’s distinctive pattern.
Further extensions of the brand identity included a mobile app and a three dimensional signage system. The app was designed to assist visitors to the lighthouse in a multitude of ways including the provision of information about each of the lighthouses and their history. A route planner reinforces the “trail” aspect of the brand, linking each location with walking, cycling or driving routes. The app also includes a digital review system inspired by the lighthouse guestbook, whereby visitors could write brief comments on each lighthouse and post pictures from their stay.
The information signage system developed for the lighthouses was again inspired by the “framing” system introduced in the logo. As visitors walked through the site they would be guided by small foot signage while large monoliths would frame the environment, providing information on their specific subject whether it be the  lighthouse itself or interesting sights in the surrounding landscape.
