In my animation, I am highlighting the issues of elderly people with mental or physical health issues who are unable to care for their pets for a charity, Leicester Animal Aid. This is a form of indirect neglect which needs to be stressed. Due to certain issues, in my animation I am focusing on dementia, pet owners can forget their pet’s basic needs such as feeding, walks or baths and can forget that their pets depend on them for survival. This can lead to dangerous health complications for their pets from being too dirty, underfeeding, overfeeding and lack of exercise. I will be giving attention to pet owners that have dementia that overfeeds their dog due to memory issues. Feeding your dog multiple times a day for a sustained amount of time can lead to obesity. Over time your dog can get joint pain, heart issues, arthritis, diabetes, etc... I am going to call attention to the nature of these issues through the characters Maude (elderly woman), Winston (Dachshund dog) and Isla (Maude’s carer). If elderly people with health issues, live alone and don’t have carers, it can become harder for them to take care of their dog’s needs, which is why my persona is targetted towards carers.
