Las Vegas 40s Branding (NBA Expansion Team)

For my project, I created an expansion team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team is located in Las Vegas, Nevada and goes by the name of the “Forties.” The name originated from the state locomotive which is the “Nevada 40.” I wanted to change up the generic Las Vegas color scheme, and decided to go with teal (11bac4), purple (5b67af), light blue (6cbce9), yellow (ffcc3f), dark grey (232323), medium grey (3d3d3d), light grey (d8d8d8), white (ffffff), and black (000000). I decided to make 2 logos, one main and one alternate. The main logo is the front of a train with the text of “Las Vegas” and “40s” on the front. The alternate logos is mainly text oriented with the “40’s” being the star of the show. Small details include the line in the 0, representing the lines of a basketball and the apostrophe is the state of Nevada, where Las Vegas is located. Both of these logos were created in Illustrator. The main slogan of the team is “The Station Always Wins.” I thought of the famous Vegas saying “The House Always Wins” and thought how I could tie that to my team. I decided to slightly alter the saying to “The Station Always Wins” in order to fit the theme of the locomotive. Next, I created three different colorways of uniforms in Adobe Photoshop. The first is a light blue base with accents of yellow and white included. On the left side of the chest is the Nevada state flag with a Nike logo on the right side. The second jersey is a black base with accents of light blue, white, and yellow. On the left side of the chest is the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign with a Nike logo on the right side. The third and last jersey is a whiteout jersey with accents of light blue. On the left side of the chest is the main Las Vegas 40s logo with a Nike logo on the right side. Moving onto the team gear, I made a hoodie in which the players would wear on the bus/plane rides to the stadium. The hoodie includes the alternate logo with the team slogan “The Station Always Wins” above it.

Next, I made sellable team merchandise, including a team hat, a water bottle, and a championship T-Shirt. The promotional item that would be given away to fans attending a game is a lanyard with a repeating pattern on it of the team name and logo. For my business card I made sure to include both logos, the slogan “The Station Always Wins,” phone number, email, fax number, website(s), and stadium address. I wanted to use the main colors of the team being light blue, yellow, and white to construct the base of the card before any information went on it. The business card was fully made in Adobe Illustrator. My billboard consists of 2 team players with team info such as the website, social media handles, slogan, and stadium address. When I thought of making a magazine for a sports team, I knew that it would be a lot more fitting to do a Sports Illustrated magazine rather than doing a newspaper magazine ad. On the SI magazine, I still included the slogan, website, and stadium address while explaining the expectations of the team for the upcoming season. I was stuck with what to make as packaging for my team, but I remembered that at the team store customers would need something to carry their apparel in, so I made a team themed shopping bag. Included on the bag is the main logo, slogan, phone number, email address, and fax number. I kept my stationary looking simple, just having “Las Vegas Forties” and the main logo at the top, a low opacity alternate logo in the white, and my contact information in the yellow bar at the bottom. For the design of the tickets, I made three different versions including a different base color for each to diversify the look of the team. Lastly, I made an Instagram mockup for the team with various graphics you would see on an NBA team’s Instagram. The graphics include a gameday, accolade, birthday, record broken, and final score graphics.
