ISTD 2014: The Hypodermic Needle

Background

They hypodermic needle is an object with an almost split personality. On one hand hypodermic needles are the vessels for medicine that cures us. Each year hypodermic needles facilitate thousands of people giving blood that is critical for blood transfusions. On the other hand many people have a fear of needles and they are also associated with the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Concept

Keeping this in mind I created a book about the hypodermic needle that comes from a positive place. In doing that I want to underline the need for cleanliness so the design became very clean as well. I have taken a lot of inspiration from Swiss typography: Armin Hofmann, Josef Müller Brockmann and Wim Crouwel, being important influences. Throughout the book I’ve used French folds to make it difficult to see certain information that portrays the needle in a potentially negative light. These French folds can be opened using perforations on these pages, mimicking the needle packaging. I bound the book with a needle and thread to imitate how the needle punctures the skin. The two colours I used were a very deep blood red and forest green. The green is used to highlight information but also to communicate infection and disease. I punched a hole through the book using a needle to underline the function of the object. This project was awarded a pass by the ISTD.
