'Adam' was my honours thesis project and includes a case-bound, hard-cover book of my illustrations alongside W.E.G Louw's poem of the same name. The poem loosely follows the narrative of the biblical Adam and his journey through the world, which gave me the opportunity to explore story-telling, atmosphere and a sense of the monumental in my work.
 
Since it's an Afrikaans poem, I've included brief English descriptions of the narrative.

Part 1: Prologue
Adam emerges from a deep sleep when he hears a mysterious voice speaking to him. After he gains consciousness, however, the voice is gone. As dawn breaks, he gets up and heads to the waterside.

Part 2: Baptism
When Adam reaches the shore, he looks at his reflection in the water, but a more abstract, dream-like Adam looks back at him. In a kind of baptismal ritual, he jumps into the water and wades around, until the current carries him off to a distant island. Once he reaches the island, he falls into a deep sleep again.

Part 3: The Dream
He descends through layers of consciousness into a dreamy, abstract world. Here, Adam beholds the wonders of the universe: God, the angels, stars, the young earth, the wildlife and nature's pristine beauty. However, he realises that he is a one-of-a-kind being, alone in the world.

Part 4: Eve
When Adam wakes up, Eve has mysteriously appeared at his side. While she slowly emerges from the depths of sleep, he watches her in awe and wonder. He sees his 'likeness' in her, a sameness he longed for since his realisation that he is alone in the world. Together they go to the shore and walk into the water.

Adam and Eve explore the world; everything reveals itself as an exciting discovery.

Part 6: Resolution
As night falls, they rest on a slope in the garden and Adam reflects on everything that has happened so far. His mind drifts to the gifts he has received, his plans and hopes, only to realise again that it would have been for nought had he been alone in the universe. Adam has the final, fulfilling realisations that, in his concerns over his alone-ness, however, he unknowingly dwelt in the garden with God, who has given him somebody with whom to share in the joys of love, care and the wonders of the universe.
