Johannesburg is timeless, an African metropolis set in the concrete of colonial constructs.

My poster design consists of a photograph (taken by me) of a mural of Jan van Riebeeck, the Cosmopolitan building and a modern building made in the late 20th century. These three buildings represent colonialism, Art Nouvea and the influence of modernity. The mural of the person reaching out on the orange building represents postmodernity.

The photograph of the historical timeline of Johannesburg was carefully edited (each phase is represented in a different colour/style) to create a sense of depth in the history of my city.

On top of this image are three taxis, juxtaposed. The taxis symbolise progress. They have been depicted in the three primary colours to represent structure, a strong basis of Jo'burg life. The three ‘Afro-Futurist’ taxis were created with long black legs, my idea was to put them up on a pedestal – I want to praise the existence of the Jo’burg taxi.

My city is the epitome of progress, we change and adapt in the most diverse ways. The history of this progress is embedded in the place we call home.
