Skateboard laser Engraved Epoxy Resin Project

Graphic Design II Skateboard Project
This project as a digital and hands on experience in order to demonstrate the contrast between dull and vibrant. The board made are laser engraved and filled with colored resin in order to represent a dull life and a vibrant life.
PROCESS:
From left to right the sketches are my first to last. The circled ideas on the first page are the narrowed down ideas. After the first critique with my class, my final idea switched from flowers to cracks.
Final illustrator files of both boards: I traced two images from the internet to develop the final product on illustrator.
Wood Engraving Test and Final Skateboard Engraving: I used a laser cutter to laser engrave a small portion of my illustration into a piece of wood to observe how it would look in person. Next, I laser engraved my boards which took two and a half hours each.
Epoxy Test: To test the epoxy, I bought some epoxy at my local store and used dye to create the color to which the I poured it in the silicon mold.
Spray Painted Boards: I spray painted one board black and one board white
Epoxy: The goal was to fill both boards cracks with red and blue epoxy although I ran into the problem of the epoxy coming out way to fast.
Sanding the Epoxy and respray painting : Not only did the epoxy come out of the cup too fast but it went everywhere! While using a heat gun and paint scraper to try and get the epoxy off, I found out quickly the paint came off as well and I had to sand the whole thing down. After sanding I had to spray paint both boards again.
Taping board and Repour Epoxy: To prevent the epoxy from getting on the actual board, I taped the entire board and cut the crack in order to pour the epoxy in the crack. I redid the board and have to repour epoxy in the crack.
Painting and Final Product: Once the epoxy dried, I took off the tape and it turns out that some parts of the spray paint were coming off. Also there was some epoxy residue that managed to get under the tape at some places. I made the choice to hand paint the entire board which worked very well and I am extremely happy about the result. The first picture is before I painted the board and the rest are the final result.
On The Wall: I hung the boards on the wall using wire and clips.
