This project was created during an intensive, week-long pattern making workshop. This pattern was inspired by the story of "Sohni Mahiwaal", a tragic love story in which the heroine Sohni, unhappily married to a man she despises, swims every night across the river using an earthenware pot to keep afloat in the water, to where her beloved Mehar herds buffaloes. One night her sister-in-law replaces the earthenware pot with a vessel of unbaked clay, which dissolves in water and she dies in the whirling waves of the river.
The main motifs I chose to work with were the moon representing Sohni's journey at night, the pot which was the vessel she used to help her float across the river, the river and the flower representing their love.
I created a pattern for the end pages of a proposed story book with a more detailed motif acting as the title illustration. This pattern can also be used for merchandise of the book.
