Designing a basketball court was something we wanted to do for a very long time, so when przestrzeń (an agency working for Lay’s) reached out to us to come up with a CSR intervention for them, we had an idea ready to be made into reality. We got all excited, scouting for the basketball court that we could transform. The project’s principle was to reinvigorate a place and add some creative flair to an otherwise undistinguished bit of public space. We wanted to be bold with the design, but at the same time not to obstruct the functionality of the court. This is why we invited professional players to advise us all through the design process, to make sure that our love for flashy sports aesthetics did not make the space unusable for real-life basketball lovers.
MARKING THE SPOT
We set our sights on a court in a public park in Witomino, Gdynia’s residential district full of blocks of flats and greenery, and got to work. As part of the communication strategy, we launched a crowdfunding page to get people involved in the process and top up Lay’s contribution to the project.
However, nothing’s ever as easy as it seems — the technical specs of the court’s surface limited our color palette and the array of shapes we could paint. Our designer worked with these restraints in mind, drawing inspiration from the simple, angular architecture of the district. Have a look at the typographical composition they assembled!
The monumental lettering, clearly visible from a hill right next to the court, spells out WITOMINO, the name of the neighborhood, making the court into a local landmark. A part of our team fixed up the urban furniture around the court, so as not to leave any loose ends, while the other part made sure that the media picked up the story.
