TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is anime enthusiasts between 13 - 30 years old who are familiar with Studio Ghibli's production properties.

BACKGROUND
Studio Ghibli films depict hand-drawn fantasies with whimsical characters and unique adventures.

OBJECTIVE
My objective was to design a brighter, more playful inverse of the original movie poster which had dark, mysterious elements. I wanted to create something that wasn’t cluttered with too many elements from the film while maintaining the mystery of the original poster. I needed to narrow in on specific scenes and objects to play up the bright and playful feel that is present throughout most of the movie.

My first thought was to use bright, puffy clouds because they appeared often and added to the weightless feeling. I attempted to use the hilly landscape, but it was too colorful and distracting, which didn’t fit well. A transparent gradient on the characters was added to emphasize the overall airiness. Lastly, I chose Howl’s floating castle as the focal point, which continued in the mobile and desktop platforms.
