"Naturally" assignment for SiNTLUCAS

"Naturally" assignment for SiNTLUCAS
Here you can see my work process of the assignment "Naturally" for my education at SiNTLUCAS.
Daypart 1
For Daypart 1 we had to gather a bunch of materials from the nature outside of our school building. We had to walk around outside with the goal of finding as many different kinds of materials as possible, and bring them back into the school building to use them for a later assignment.

Here you can see all the photos I took of the materials I found.
Here are some of my favorite findings in more detail.
Daypart 2
Once we gathered all of the necessary materials, we then had to use them as tools to experiment and create several painted images.

Here you can see some of the images I made using the materials I gathered.
Here you can see some of my favorite results in more detail.
Daypart 3
After we were done painting all of our experiments, we had to import those experiments into Adobe Photoshop and edit each one of them until they became something completely different, yet still recognisable.
For this example, I took one of the paintings, cut out the black dripping/melting effect, and then overlayed a leaf texture on top of it to make it look a bit like a flame.
I then repeated the same process 50+ times so I would have enough choises to choose from to use in my final product.
Here you can see the rest of my experiments.

Daypart 4
Once I was done editing all of my images, I chose a few of them that I thought would be useful for the final product, and decribed what theme they could be related to. I also gave each image two theme words.
Image 1
This image looked a bit like a flame to me. The shape of the object resembled that of a flame. Together with the texture of a leaf included in the shape, I thought this would be useful for a movie poster about some kind of forest fire.

Theme words: Fire and Leaf
Image 2
I thought this image could be used in an advertisement for some kind of Fall Disco Party. The shape and the texture of the leaf would indicate that this would be taking place, or would be related to the fall season, while the bright colors would indicate that this is some kind of disco party or festival.

Theme words: Disco and Fall
Image 3
I thought this image could be used in some kind of poster for a horror movie. I could use the shape and the texture of the leaf to create some kind of haunted forest, while the darker colors would make the theme look a bit scary. I could also use the red paint splatters to indicate blood, further making the poster look like one of a horror movie.

Theme words: Scary and Horror
Image 4
I thought I could use this to create a poster for some kind of paintball competition. The leaves being in the shapes of paint splats, mixed with the bright colors, could resemble the paint splats left by paintball guns, which could be used as decoration to show that the poster would be for a paintball competition. The weird shapes would also make the poster look a bit happy and crazy, because all of the shapes would be weird and imperfect instead of perfect boring shapes.

Theme words: Happy and Crazy
Image 5
I thought I could use this image to create some kind of poster/advertisement for a water party that would be taking place during the fall season. The bright blue colors mixed with the dripping/melting effect of the shape could be used to give the poster the vibe of a water fight, as you'd be able to see water dripping down from all angels. The texture of the leaf that's used in the shape could also show that this would be taking place during the fall season.

Theme words: Wet and Crazy
Daypart 5
For this part of the assignment, we had to describe 10 different emotions by making our own fonts of them. We had to show what kind of emotion we were talking about, not only by swriting it down, but by also making the text visually look like the emotion.

Here you can see all the emotions I had to describe. All of them are in Dutch because I am studying at a Dutch school, and all the emotions we were assigned to describe were given to us in Dutch.
Daypart 6
For this part of the assignment, we had to make several posters using the Helvetica font, by using the font in special and original ways. We had to use Adobe Illustrator to create our posters, and we had to make the posters look original, new and exciting, while also utilising a grid.

Here you can see the posters I made.
Daypart 7 to 12
Here you can see the process of me making my final products.
I first took a picture of the painting I wanted to use.
I then exported the picture as a .jpg to my laptop where I used Adobe Photoshop to cut out the parts I wanted to use.
Once I finished cutting out the melting/dripping effect, I changed it's color to fit more with the theme I was aiming for, and changed the color settings to CMYK so the colors would stay consistent if the poster would be printed out on a piece of paper.
(This image was taken before I changed the color settings to CMYK, which is why the Photoshop file is still labeled with RGB)
After I fully finished the shape, I created a grid, duplicated the shape a few times, moved and rotated them into the right position and trimmed off some parts in order to create two straight lines that looked like they were dripping water.
Once I had two separate lines, I added a title, chose a bunch of random names of artists who created water themed art, and chose a location, date, and time in order to finish the first poster.
Once the first poster was finished, I then moved, rotated and recolored certain parts of it and changed the text with new names, locations, dates and times in order to create two new similar looking posters for different events.
After some feedback from my teachers, I tweaked some of the proportions and added some extra effects to make the text more readable when the full image would be scaled up.
Once I was finished editing the posters, I exported them into Adobe Indesign so I could add bleeding marks to the images to prevent small white lines from appearing at the edges.
And finally, here you can see my final products, which I exported as .pdf's so I could hand them in to my teacher, and so they would be printed properly.
Looking back on this project, I think it went pretty well. Every time I had trouble with something, I would ask my teacher for help so I could fix the issue. Whenever I thought I was on the right path or when I completed an assignment, I would ask my teacher for feedback so I could make the final product just right. And I exported everything in the right formats, with bleeding marks, the correct resolutions, the correct color settings, etc... and there were no major roadblocks that I could not get over. So overall I think the assignment went pretty well. If I had to do anything differently next time, I'd probably start a bit earlier with some of the assignments, because it took me a long time to finish some of them, causing me to work for long periods of time, while dividing it into more smaller parts would have been more relaxing. This assignment has also taught me how to use several different kinds of Adobe software, and how to correctly design and create a poster.
