Festival Design
The annual theater festival in the Hessian capital invites international productions in the fields of opera, theater, dance and performance to a special festival month in the former spa town of the German royals. This year the festival reflects its historical background. Inspired by the opulence of bygone festivities, it looks to the future. The guiding principle being the courage to build worlds, to visualize the intangible and utopia. Great festivals always celebrate both appearance and reality. The stylistic device of collage takes up these cues and builds its own surreal worlds. Referring to festival motifs of recent years, supplemented by abstract and historical elements, the recurring red rectangle is becoming the playing field of associations this time around. Curved color surfaces emphasize the fluidity of utopia. The playful ligatures of the type harmonize with the floral impression of the collage worlds – on posters, banners, foldouts, postcards, stickers, signage and in the program booklet. Utopia is a fleeting thing, always in the process of becoming.
