The Female Gaze

The female gaze is described as a "loaded term" meaning it has no origin with no single definition.
The project focused solely on taking away the unconscious thought on how we should pose and look as women for the camera. This is reinforced by Goffman's theory on “Gender Advertisement” (1976) highlights the gender displays in western media. By looking at over 500 different photo advertisements and analysing the different poses, positioning of the body, clothing etc., he finds contrasts between how males and females are portrayed. Goffman identified patterns of the so-called “gender posing” . Goffman argues that these poses have nothing to do with biology or natural traits, but rather with how our culture is defined as feminine and masculine. This is supported by john Berger's novel The ways of seeing (1972), which discusses how advertisement, and the historical presentation of women aren’t much different showing them as sexual objects.
