Editorial Design: Hungry Cat
Project Brief
A unique concept was developed for a hardcover printed book based on a person whose story is worthy of telling. Students had to conduct in-depth research about their subject in order to develop an editorial concept and narrative strategy, as well as write partial original text for the book, develop a design concept and execute selective imaging components. Convincing prototypes, presentation boards with 3-D mock-ups, had to be produced for the book. Only a selective part of the book was to be executed and showcased. All the text and imaging components of the book had to be original and self-generated by the students.
List of Deliverable
01 - Book text in typewritten format
02 - A3 presentation boards (4 minimum) showing all components and spreads
03 - PDF containing flats of outer cover, inner cover, two endpapers, title page, copyright page, content page, one completed chapter, three additional chapter
Rationale
The subject I researched had her life experience based on her life in Hong Kong and was known for her culinary skills by her friends. The visual design of the book was then inspired by her culinary skills as well as her cultural identity as a Hong Kong Chinese lady. The illustrations were done in a charcoal style to evoke the sense of revisiting old memories. Chinese calligraphy was used in certain parts of the editorial design the indicate the narrator’s mother tongue and how she would have told the story.
