Jewellers Workbench

Jewellers Workbench:

This is a commission I recently completed for a jeweller.

The jewellers workbench can be as simple or as complex as required. We decided on the second option so a couple of evenings were spent taking notes and measurements where drawers and clamps should be placed ensuring the finished piece would be ergonomic and a pleasure to work from.

The last requirement was for it to look like no other jewellery bench in the world!
Over 150 hours later and the piece was finished. The top was made from a single slab of English Oak 10cm thick, 120cm long and 50cm deep. The frame made from steel. There are nine soft-close drawers in total. Some of which are conventional drawers to contain various tools and paraphernalia, others are simple slabs of Oak with 850 holes drilled in them specifically to allow the hundreds of different burr profiles to be neatly organised.

Where most other benches are designed around the user working from a sitting position on a normal chair of around 45cm high, the client wanted the bench to be at a sufficient height so he could sit on a 60cm high stool and have the work piece exactly at eye level. This height also provides a comfortable working position when stood up.
