Prince of Wales Engine House

Prince of Wales Engine House
This project explored the relationship between an abandoned building, with particular historical significance, and its relationship with new materials which were introduced to structurally support the site.
The materials were carefully chosen to humbly highlight the antiquated but remarkable original features. A copper wrapped installation was designed to support an overarching lift, while also acting as a monument to pay its due respects to the original use of the building - a mine.
Located in Bodmin, the old mining shaft was surrounded by the renowned and mysterious moor which came with tales of beasts. This element of fantasy and uncertainty was reflected through the design and the use of dark and untelling colours and materials. There is almost an unspoken agreement between the building and the site that the secrets of Bodmin Moor are not to be shared.
The design has a focus on accessibility - promising to allow all curious visitors an insight into the landmark. The long tunnel and lift offer for convenient access for those with wheelchairs, physical disabilities and even pushchairs.
