No to toxic masculinity and violence against women

The United Nations Organization (UNO), in the year 1999, designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

November 25th was chosen in honour of the sisters Patria, María Teresa and Minerva Maribal, who were violently tortured and murdered on this same date in 1960 at the behest of the dictator of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo.

The Dominican sisters were known as "Las Mariposas" and fought for better living conditions in the Dominican Republic.

To understand the causes behind the problem, we must analyze it from a gender perspective, assuming that violence derives from unequal and hierarchical power relations between men and women in society and that it is closely related to a social construction throughout history.

Violence against women is a social and public health issue; it makes no distinction between color, economic or social class, and is present all over the world.

According to the latest estimates, nearly 1 in 3 women aged 15 and older worldwide has been subjected to physical or sexual violence, indicating that the levels of violence against women and girls have remained virtually unchanged over the past decade. About 137 women are killed by their intimate partner or a family member every day.

An estimated 1 in 7 women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner or husband in the past 12 months (13% of women aged 15-49).

These numbers do not reflect the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and would be even higher if they included the cases of violence affecting women and girls, including sexual harassment, violence in digital contexts, harmful practices, and sexual exploitation.

Social isolation and economic insecurity have intensified women's vulnerability to domestic violence around the world.

Given the gravity of the situation, this date is extremely important. A global action to raise awareness, strengthen defenses, and create discussion about challenges and solutions to the problem.

A woman should imagine a world in which there is no discrimination against another woman. I hope this woman's dreams come true.

'Galactic Venus 3'

Feminine energy is this: Nature, wild and free.
Violence is unknown in their universe as no violence should ever exist in our everyday life.
No woman should ever live in fear of violence, no woman should suffer being abused, physically or  psychologically.
I hope our artistic contribution will always help to raise more awareness.
Women have gone a long way toward freedom.
And yet there is still a long way to go: now more than ever we must never give up.

Shut Up!   Every day a lot of women has to fight against those two words: women who fight for their rights, women who want to express their ideas, women who simply try to make their own part in this world. With my art, I want to say that no-one should say if we can speak or not and we have to stop this kind of violence by letting women be free to speak and make their own destiny.

Next to the physical violence I want to highlight the emotional, psychological violence, which is invisible but with dramatic impact. It prevents us to unfold our capabilities, to grow. It is part of political violence towards women, that is putting women into a situation with less rights, less power, less freedom. Violence is a very complex instrument. It can be implemented even by religion. Which is why I am choosing an image that is related to a Madonna like impression. The suffering icon of Jesus, the suffering mother and the women who suffered from violence  based on religious patriarchal rules. Violence against women is implemented in our society and represented but law, eg the prohibition of abortion. To prevent violence against women we need to observe all the hidden but powerful instruments we are facing in all societies.

because i will still adore you
with songs of dreams,

'We need each other'

In my painting, I wanted to focus on the natural order of male and female balance. By creating a scene where we can see a couple holding (to) each other without being able to determine who is holding whom, I wanted to even more point out the equality of genders and the changeability of life situations that like waves bring us to higher and lower points. As we turn the painting clockwise, the story continues—one goes up, then the other goes down, but they are still connected.
"We need each other" is the truth of all things, and this was the sentence that kept ringing nonstop inside of my mind since the very beginning of hearing about this topic. I wanted to also suggest that maybe a healthier viewpoint is not judging society but rather using the energy to teach society that without one, there cannot be another.
