The 1794 Tailgate is a tailgate that is put on by the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Donde Plowman. I was tasked with designing the look and feel from start to finish. I started off the with the logo, and it made sense to do numbers since it's title lended itself to it. I sort of knew what I wanted from the started but I still gathered inspiration to help me nail it down further.
Inspiration
Logo

I had two versions I showed my boss and honestly didn't know which one he would go for. You know the old adage of people choosing the logo you don't necessarily dig. So I was hoping that he would go for the numbered version versus the type, but you never know. By now you know which one I've already chosen, but I did have fun creating both. There was just something fun about the numbers.

Created some invite cards to be mailed out to people and I really wanted to class it up. I first wanted to go all out with a box and some very cool wood lasered lanyards. But time didn't allow for it; good thing football happen every year. Cause like most teams, there's always next year. All though I will say the Vols are looking pretty good this year (2022).

With this design I wanted to do a deboss on a few different areas and time almost didn't allow for it either but our printing team made some moves for us to be able to make it happen in time. I also wanted to do a blind deboss and by the time things got there I was on vacation and a lot of problems ensued but our senior art director navigated them for me and they turned out beautiful.

And I say this all the time but our photographer and now intern photographer always makes our stuff look so good. And really for me makes me personally look better than I am I feel at times. They deserve a ton of credit.
Box

Alright, now that you've made it this far, I'll dive into what I wanted to do for the project I mentioned above. So I wanted to create a stylized box, well at the time it had to be more simple; but the idea was to be cool and stylized. I digress. So I wanted to create a box with a cool insert and have some lanyards sit inside it with a card inviting people. It was gonna be a whole thing. But alas. I can show you some glimpses of what I plan to do next year. Can't show it all, just on the off chance, someone tries a little someth'n someth'n.
Wood Lanyard Card

This was gonna be the showstopper if it had worked out. And I don't mind showing this more cause this one is a little more involved and I'm still fine tuning. The idea was that we would laser print the logos from wood and with the smell of charred wood, placing them in the box would, in theory, would have been a delight when the invitees opened them. My professional and personal opinion of course.
Well I hope you enjoyed going down this road of 1794 land. It was a ton of fun to help create and next year will be even better.
