Collaboration and Co-creation for Good Clinical Trials Collaborative Guidelines (GCTC)
Human-Centred Design led consultations in Low and Middle-Income Countries
Context
The Good Clinical Trials Collaborative (GCTC) aims to create new guidance to support a more effective regulatory environment for randomized clinical trials (RCTs), with the goal of improving patient care by enabling more informative, ethical, and efficient trials.

Objective
We conducted Human-Centered Design (HCD)-led consultations in two phases with RCT teams and participants in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The aim of these consultations was to gather insights from diverse RCT types and settings, which would be used to produce a report.

Intent
The final report seeks to highlight people's needs and motivations when interacting with RCTs, and to provide actionable recommendations for the guidance content, as well as for the practice of ethical and efficient RCTs in the Global South (seven low and middle-income countries - LMICs).

Timeline
The HCD-led consultations were conducted from March to August 2021.
My role
Phase 1:
I conducted desk research to map stakeholders and the existing CT ecosystem, including a landscape assessment of public engagement initiatives, recent policy around CTs, and attitudes around CTs, as well as incidents that may have caused distrust or bigger concerns in the past 4 to 5 years. Together with my team, I designed co-creation activities and protocols for field immersions and expert interviews. During the 15 sessions, I took notes and participated in synthesizing the key learnings that were detailed in the Round 1 report shared with the GCTC team.

Phase 2:
I worked with my team to design supporting visual tools for local partners to facilitate discussions in their respective geographies. Additionally, I synthesized key takeaways, mapped behavioral patterns across geographies among different stakeholders, and documented case studies for the final report.
