Colour Seen as Fine Art: The Traffic Lights Stand Still

Brief: Colour Seen as Fine Art Inspired by German Contemporary Photographers
Title: Yet the Traffic Lights Stand Still

This abstract fine art series came from the realization that I only slow down during my day when waiting at red traffic lights. The power traffic lights have over me is quite perplexing, regulating and organizing the flow and movement of mass numbers of people. Bernd and Hilla Becher have inspired me to see structures around me quite differently and to notice their existence in my public surroundings. Once analyzing robots and all these arrows bossing and controlling my every move, I came to the conclusion that they are actually quite beautiful. Their colours are soft and twinkling, scattered around our brown industrial public space. It is a magical show of lights at night dotted along the cape fold mountains. When giving yourself the time and space to really look at your surroundings, there is so much beauty around us that we rush past.

Additionally, Douglas Huebler and his grids of images have inspired me to look at the passage of time differently. Structures placed on the streets around us stand still while emotions and bursts of explosions, drama, life changing pivotal events birth death and rebirth all buzz around. Yet the robots stand still. Cars come screeching past, ambulances, firemen, people from all walks of life drive past. Yet the traffic lights stand still. It is as if they are watching. Yet the traffic lights stand still. I wanted to show this stillness and calmness.
