The challenge 

Ethnographic research for handmade product design 
aiming to show the identity of the Magdalena department in Colombia.


The solution

The end result was 3 sets to create pieces of jewelry
 inspired by the artisanal techniques of traditional fishermen

Desk research & fieldwork

After a desktop research, we made a trip to corroborate the information in the field, though participatory, non-participatory observation and interviews to find identity patterns.

We visited several cities: Santa Marta, Sierra Nevada, Taganga, Aracataca y Ciénaga.
 We talked to people, looked for craft workshops, visited museums and learned about the indigenous and popular culture of the region.
The field diary
It was used to collect the perceptions, emphasizing in the information about culture and society. It also served as reference in the formalization phase.

We analized aspects such as: culture, music, dance, gastronomy, sports, customs, entertainment, traditions, beliefs, language and literature.

The final result

3 sets with which users can replicate some of Magdalena's traditional techniques
to create pieces of handmade jewelry:

1. Metal embossing from Tayrona indigenous culture
2. Wood carving of fishermen's canoes
3. Weaving of fishing nets

For creating pendants with shapes of the "albacora" fish,
 one of the most common species in Taganga, Colombia
Carving set
To create accessories through wood carving following the instructions.
It proposes to carve a miniature canoe.

In the manual it is proposed to
 weave a miniature fishing net as an accessory.
