The Old Man and the Sea book cover project

Project 2 of my graphic design class: Design three book covers for the same book. The themes for the covers were 1. Typography, 2. Handmade materials, and 3. Designer's choice.
1. Typography.
I chose the book "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway because it was so rich in symbolism. As I was reading bits of it, I kept having images come to my mind and it made the design process very enjoyable.
Here are a couple of my first drafts for my typography design, as well as one that didn't make the cut.
2. Handmade Materials
I really wanted to incorporate a subtle touch of Christian symbolism in one of my designs because it is a very prominent theme in the book. The bloodied and wounded palms seemed like a good option. I drew the hands on watercolor paper and used a photo I took for the background. Then I drew in the blood and edited the colors in Photoshop and Illustrator.

The original hands, some experimenting, and another handmade option that would have worked well for typography, too.
3. Designer's choice
You can tell I prefer a certain font type, haha.
This one is a bit more abstract, and I liked that about it. The design gives enough away that it prepares the reader for the book, yet it will take on more meaning as the reader gets deeper into the plot and the themes

As one can see, I struggled picking a color scheme and finally went a different route, deciding to make the surroundings just a bit more realistic.
