Film: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Scene that is being recreated in a modern updated take
Creative Direction
My intention for the scene was to create the scene in a modern update style but still reconsgiable to
people who have seen the film. The aim was to create it as close and faithfully to the orginal scene. This is a challenging scene as it is a eye-level shot which means that the shot will have to be taken at a low stance of the camera/tripod.

Contrast Lights x 2
Dark Background draped onto the floor to create a black floor
The camera was on manual during the session
Set up
The camera was put back as far as it go in order to capture the wide screen shot and to capture the alien and the crowd.
Lighting
The main lighting came from behind the alien figure to create the light from the spaceship so that there is a light sihoulette effect on the side of the alien and the crowd
It needed to be blue to fit the original light colour in the original scene
Smoke
The smoke was made up of over 30 images with different smoke shapes on
Action
To create this scene 97 shots were taken
60 were taken of the different smoke shapes
33 were testing the light and the poses for the crowd/models and alien for the final shot
This ensured that I had a range to chose from for the final shot.
It took over 30 mins to produce the number of photographs that be used for the shot and for the shots that could be combined together for the smoke.
