Stevie Bales's profile

History of Disability in America

The Brief
I was contracted by Gann Academy to consult and provide graphic design for the 11th grade History of Disability exhibit at the Waltham Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation. The students worked throughout the school year to put together an entire exhibit on the History of Disability in America, in order to work towards funding for a full museum on the same subject.
Design Process
After a fruitful discussion with the students I helped to further develop the brand, color palette, and layout of the exhibit. Using their words and initial design ideas I helped to tell their story using interpretive panels in distinct locations throughout the space.
Solution
Housed in a once vibrant factory, in the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, this exhibit was to help expose the hardships of those with disabilities. This was a full exhibit, open to the public for the summer of 2018, including: interpretive graphics, historical artifacts, and even an iPad interactive.
Project Client
Gann Academy is Greater Boston’s independent Jewish high school, recognized for an innovative curriculum that combines in-depth critical analysis, experiential learning, and a focus on building a better world. With an unparalleled commitment to faculty development, small classes, and a unique advisory system, Gann prepares students to live lives rich with accomplishment and meaning and to contribute to their communities and the world. Gann Academy is located in Waltham, Massachusetts and serves more than 280 students from 22 communities across the full spectrum of Jewish observance.
Project Location
The mission of the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation is to encourage and inspire future innovation in America. They do this through their collections and programs, by exploring the historical impact of industry on American culture, by examining the dynamic processes of invention and innovation, by celebrating their location in Waltham as a foundation of the American Industrial Revolution, by connecting the expertise of older generations with the inquisitiveness of young people, and by delighting audiences of all ages with an educational and engaging museum experience.
